Pet Population Control
The city government of Coyhaique has proved totally unable and unwilling to deal with the problem of abandonned street dogs, and canine overpulation in general, in a humane and practical way. But REYPA believes that the solution is a combination of sponsored low-cost pet sterilization programs plus an ongoing educational effort, aimed at making pet owners more aware of their responsibilities. REYPA is working hard to change the local culture so that abandoning unwanted dogs to lead a desperate life in the streets is no longer acceptable. Many working-class families simply cannot afford to neuter their dogs, but REYPA, with the cooperation of a national veterinarians organization, and the support of outside donors like The Patagonian Foundation is making low-cost pet sterilization a reality |
Currently we are organizing and running four major, week-long, pet sterilization programs each year. The impact is already starting to be felt on the streets of Coyhaique. In addition to surgeries, REYPA is also providing a wealth of information to the community regarding pet care, the on-going importance of sterilizations, and the duties of responsible pet ownership. Our community pet neutering project began in December 2006 (when we sterilized 280 dogs and cats). In April 2007, REYPA joined forces with the Coyhaique Health Department, a national veterinary organization, RIMA, and the Patagonian Foundation to successully sterilize 300 dogs and cats in Coyhaique. These surgeries occur in community centers located in some of Coyhaique's poorest communities, where people without cars can bring their pets. |
We are very thankful to the local Coyhaique Health Department, which contributed critical financial support, more volunteers, and guidance, and especially to the many volunteers and surgeons from REYPA and RIMA whose commitment and long hours of work make this project possible. The third round of sterilizations (which we are planning to schedule every 90 days, in order to adequately address and solve the dog overpopulation problem) took place successfully in early August 2007. |
